A new S/1 coin released by the National Central Bank (BCR) has the Andean cat as the star. This is the ninth coin of the series focused on the threatened wildlife in the country.
This coin went into circulation on July 3 featuring the “most threatened cat in Peru”, according to El Comercio.
“Among the felines in our country this is the most threatened species and it is mainly in rock areas where there is scares vegetation, from Ancash to Tacna”, El Comercio explained.
The Andean Cat can be found in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru.
This coin has, on its back side, an image of the feline with a geometric design with vertical lines. The scientific name, Leopardus jacobita, can also be read here. Only 10 million coins have been issued and the bank is selling them in special cases for 2 soles each.
