Lima’s alternative Oktoberfests

This weekend, the “largest beer festival in Peru”:http://www.peruthisweek.com/blogs-oktoberfest-is-back-in-lima-101118 is taking place. However, it’s not the only option for beer lovers. We got in touch with the organizers of two other Oktoberfests, both taking place next weekend.

The Oktoberfestival, or German Cultural Festival, promises to have more than beer on offer. You’ll be able to see exhibitions by well-known artists, watch German films at the Cinema festival, and keep the kids entertained with plenty of games. There will, of course, also be lots and lots of German beer and food for sale.

And, according to the press release, if you want to see a giant meatball, you can do that too. Who wouldn’t want to see a giant meatball? They haven’t confirmed the size of this massive meatball, but I’m guessing it’s pretty big.

The meatball will be on display in the gastronomic patio alongside “the best traditional food in the German-speaking world:” sausages, sauces, salads, and desserts will all be available.

The Bondesliga celebrates its 50 years with a 2-hour-long documentary. According to the press release, “The best goals, stories, and the stars of years past, like Uwe Seeler and Franz Beckenbauer and those of today, like Jürgen Klopp, Mario Götze, and Franck Ribery.”

Ensamble Stradivarius will play a recital of classical artists Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert, among others, on Friday at 9 p.m. and lauded classical guitarist Daniel Romero will play pieces by Bach Saturday night at 8 p.m.

Curious as to what living in 1960 East Berlin was like? Watch ‘Berlin, Boxhagener Platz,’ directed by Matti Geschonneck.

And, of course, no festival is ever truly complete without some friendly competition. ‘Blindkick’ – a game between Peru and Germany in which the footballers will be blindfolded and relying on instructions from teammates.

“This is something that has to be seen, apart from by the footballers who won’t even be able to see their own goals,” according to the press release.

The Oktoberfestival is organized by Peru.Erleben magazine (Peru this Week, for German speaking expatriates!) and German brewery, Erdinger, and will run Friday Oct. 25 to Sunday Oct. 27.

And, if that’s not enough for you, there’s yet another Oktoberfest, this one hosted by Cevecería de Tomás. It’s the fourth artisanal beer festival in Peru and promises to be a lot of fun. To see the way they’ve celebrtaed in previous years, have a look at their video:

If you’re interested in artisanal beer, this is the place to be next weekend. Ten producers of artisanal beer will be there, and there will be talks on the production of artisanal and home-made beer, as well as tasting.

Brewing experts Eduardo De Tomas Basurto, Jorge Loo Murphy, and Carlos Altamirano will be there. As well as the serious side to beer – that of the brewing – there’s also the far more serious side – that of the drinking – which won’t be overlooked. You’ll be able to try lots of good ale. Cusqueña, pilsen and cristal are all very well, but if you’re into beer that tastes of something, Peru’s growing interest in ales will get you as excited as it gets me.

There’ll also be a Queen of the Beer elected, live music, dancing, and games. Oh, and there’ll be beer. Real beer. Lots of real beer.

So, whether you’re interested in the cultural, artisanal, social or musical aspect of Oktoberfest, or just the drinking of excellent beer, you’ve got plenty of options.
