Venezuela’s soccer federation accuses Peru of foul play

Venezuela’s soccer federation has accused Peruvian authorities of foul play, after a plane carrying Venezuela’s players was temporarily denied entry into the country’s airspace.

>In a >statement posted on its website, Venezuela’s soccer federation said the plane was denied entry into Peru, and had to turn around.

As the plane headed towards Cali, Colombia, the flight got the necessary authorization, but did not have enough fuel to reach Lima, the federation said, adding that they had been denied entry "without any reasonable explanation."

Upon arriving in Peru, the team claims it was searched by a "special anti-drug unit," which led to protests from Venezuela’s coach, Cesar Farias, and president of the Venezuelan Football Federation, Rafael Esquivel.

Venezuela is scheduled to play against Peru this Friday, as part of qualifying matches for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
