Peru’s girls’ volleyball team received a hero’s welcome last night at Jorge Chavez International airport on their return home.
Hundreds of fans waited for the team, waiving flags, playing drums, and wearing the Peruvian red and white.
Once the “Matadorcitas”, as they are affectionately called, came out of the airport gate, the crowd handed them flowers, cheered and congratulated them for their impressive performance at the FIVB U18 World Championship in Thailand.
Upon arriving in Lima the entire team was taken to the Presidential Palace, where they met President Ollanta Humala and were reunited with their family and friends.
“This is an occasion to celebrate,” Humala told the team. “We have to keep supporting our team so that they can continue to compete. We must also thank the parents for their commitment.”
The girls’ team defeated some top international teams such as Italy, Slovenia, Serbia, and took No.1 ranked China to match point, on their way to a fourth place finish in the FIVB tournament.
“This is an occasion to celebrate,” Humala said.
