*Bosnia 3 Iran 1*
Not much was at stake in this game. Bosnia’s fate had already been decided by earlier losses against Argentina (1-2) and Nigeria (0-1). As the New York Times reports, Iran still had a slim chance of advancing the the next round, but only if they won against Bosnia with a substantial lead and Nigeria lost against Argentina.
So it wasn’t the most important game of the tournament, but it was an impressive finish for the Bosnian team, who took and held an early lead with a goal by Edin Dzeko in the 23rd minute and another by teammate Miralam Pjanic an hour into the match.
Iranian forward Reza Ghoochannejhad snuck in his team’s only goal late in the match, at minute 82. The Bosnian side was quick to retaliate, with an 83rd-minute goal by Avdija Vrsajevic, bringing the final score up to 3-1.
The Iranians may not have ended the tournament as victors, but Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was happy to sweep in like a parent after a little league loss with words of consolation and a smile that says “It’s okay honey, at least you tried.”
