For sixteen years and counting, the American Women’s Literary Club (AWLC) in Lima has organized an annual art show to procure funding for students and teachers in underprivileged areas of Peru—and to have a good time, no doubt. Referred to as Noche de Música y Arte (A Night of Music and Art), the gala brings together live music and artwork from contemporary visual artists from all areas of Peru.
Carrying the theme “Diversity that Inspires,” this year’s edition of Noche de Música y Arte will break from tradition and extend the ‘night’ into three days of activities for ticket holders. Held at the Franklin D. Roosevelt School’s beautiful Performing Arts Center, the schedule is as follows:
Thursday, October 10: Pre-opening event. From 7pm-9pm, guests who have purchased a ticket to Saturday’s gala can get a sneak preview of the art exhibit.
Friday, October 11: Creative writing and art workshops (10am-5pm). For an additional fee, the public can connect with their inner artist in these learning sessions, available to all ages. There will also be a free guided tour offered from 10am-11am.
Saturday, October 12: Creative writing and art workshops (10am-2pm) followed by art sale and concert (7pm-11pm). Guests of the evening event will enjoy a musical performance from renowned saxophonist, Jean Pierre Magnet, as they sip on a cocktail (or two) and admire the work of national artists.
Ticket sales of Noche de Música y Arte will support students from the Instituto Pedagógico Nacional Monterrico as well as Enseña Peru by providing a yearly salary for a PEP (Profesional Enseña Peru) who teaches in a vulnerable area of Peru.
An excerpt from the curator’s statement (Diana Riesco Lind, AWLC member):
“Today, contemporary artists from our different regions meet in this exhibition to support a greater cause, which is education in the country: support for educational projects in Peru that allow greater accessibility to knowledge, experiences and culture, in general to the different corners of the national territory, celebrating together that we are stronger and richer in our diversity.”
