Have you tried this award-winning Peruvian dark chocolate? Find out where to get your hands on this Cacaosuyo chocolate bar made from Amazonas beans.

From ‘the best kept secret of the Incas’ to internationally acclaimed, Peruvian chocolate continues to make headlines.

At the recent International Chocolate Awards 2019, Peruvian chocolate brand, Cacaosuyo, took gold for the overall best in the category of Plain/Origin Dark Chocolate. The award-winning bar was their Lakuna, a 70% dark chocolate bar with cacao from the Amazonas region of Peru.

What does a gold medal chocolate bar taste like? According to the company’s description, the Lakuna bar has floral and citrus notes and a sweetness from miel de frutas (typically a boiled concoction of panela, spices, lemon and quince fruit).

Cacaosuyo was founded in 2012 by two Peruvian entrepreneurs with no chocolate experience: Eduardo Lanfranco (hydro-electricity background) and Samir Giha (textile background).

This is just the latest award to be bestowed upon a Peruvian chocolate bar. Though cacao trees originated in the Amazon and Peruvian cacao beans have been exported for some time, it wasn’t until this past decade that Peruvian chocolate producers began making a name for themselves. Much of this can be owed to the culinary boom experienced by Peru, as well as the push for national coca farmers to switch to harvesting cacao.
