Walt Disney Co. might open a park in Peru.

LivingInPeru.com

Walt Disney corporation might be planning to build a Disneyland-like thematic park on Southern Lima, near the beaches of Asia (Cañete), as reported by El Comercio.

Asia beaches (about 1 hour drive from Lima) already have a big exclusive shopping mall with bars, discos and boutiques.

Reportedly, Disney executives would arrive in Lima this week to take a look at the 600,000 sqm plot of land (located at Km. 100 of Panamericana Sur road) and to make an offer to the owners.

Were this to happen, this would be the third Disney theme park outside the US, in addition to the ones at Paris and Tokio.

Only three days ago Walt Disney Co. had announced that will lay off 1,900 employees  from their US parks, that is, 11% of the payroll workers.

According to El Comercio, Disney had tried to buy the Parque de las Leyendas (the biggest zoo in Lima) last January, but that was not possible because of opposition from Peru’s National Institute of Culture, who alleged that the area contains archeological remains that need to be studied and preserved.

Excellent news!!  Not only great but very logical considering that the already existent parks are located in North America, Europe and Asia, so now, Latinamerica will have a theme park for the region, also, in the light of how this crisis is affecting less to Latinamerica, that now they are turning their faces towards us.

A 1-hour drive from Lima?

Only if you fly. Don't we have enough fatal accidents on the Panamericano Sur because of the high speeds and 'stupidity' of so many drivers.

Difficult for me to believe that the 'average' Peruvian family will be able to handle the high cost of visiting a Disney theme park.

# David N says :

Martin is correct. Peru is too undeveloped and its population too unevolved to have an American theme park. They should stick to their boring ancient rocks on hill tops.

To David N:
undeveloped? unevolved? Are you living in Perú? Perú is growing too fast, in some years this fact will change the country. We don't live sticked but proud of our past (not only rocks, my poor friend!)

For 'David N'

Unevolved seems quite appropo and indicative of your character in making such a bold statement as referring to Peru's ancient sites as 'boring ancient rocks on hilltops'. Nice going!

I am surpised by the fact that some think this is a bad idea. I think by the very fact that Disney is even considering Peru as a location for another one of their theme parks just comes to show that even they think Peru has some potential. Of course it won't happen right away, and Peru will need to put a lot of effort for this project to be underway, but I'm sure it is possible. If Peru continues to rapidly grow and keeps improving itself as a nation, this can happen. Just think of how attractive Peru will be, with plans on building the San Lorenzo Megaport and this theme park, Peru will once again be a centre of attraction just like it was during the Inca and Spanish Empire. This news should be EXCITING!

I think a Disney Park in Peru is an excellent idea. This huge investment would create thousands of jobs and could be a reference for new multinational companies to invest in the country. Furthermore this park will not just be for the Peruvians but for many South Americans that could travel from Argentina, Chile or Colombia to Peru and enjoy the park and visit other tourist attractions. I believe the Peru’s Disneyland would be like the France’s Disneyland where many Spaniards, Germans and British visited constantly.

Sad to say, but truly sir....you're not worth anybody's breath. I would suggest that anyone else reading this thread not engage or fuel this individual (David N) as it is clear that his only motive is to get a rise out of people. I regret ever having reacted to his ignorance in the first place. Ignorance, begets ignorance.

# joe says :
6 April, 2009 [ 16:07 ]

I think this can be potentially beneficial for Peru. This would definitely add to the current attractions that Peru already offers and of course create a lot of jobs, some good paying, and some not as good. However, Disney has a reputation for being very conservative with their spending so hopefully they will be fair to their employees and not take advantage of the laxed labor laws in Peru that are rarely enforced. But overall I see this as something positive for the country and adding another reason to visit Peru especially for those in South America by bringing Disneyland closer to those in this region.

# Dpbaleno says :
6 April, 2009 [ 17:20 ]

I was in Brazil last year and I really enjoyed a full day in a thematic park like Disneyland called Beto Carrero (the most complete of Southamerica) and I thought : When will we have something like this in Peru? , places like this are definilty milestones for a country. And now it appears this chance to have a Disneyland Park near to Lima, sounds really great, we are not definitly the best of Southamerica in terms of quality of life but with investments like this we will have better chances to grow as a country

# Martin says :
6 April, 2009 [ 17:43 ]

DPbaleno - I suggest that improvements to the Peruvian quality of life will come about when "order" arrives in Peru. A Peruvian Disney Park visited the middle and upper classes [from whereever] will result in another example of poor folks trying to sell something to the Park's visitors. Just like other Peruvian historic sites, the area surrounding the Park will be be littered and populated with people trying to exist from one day to the next.

What Peru needs is a quality educational system that generates employment that results in a wage that a family can decently live on. Educational programs via TV, etc. should attempt to educate people that by limiting the size of their family, they will be able to provide better nutrition, health and education for their family.

When the day comes when Peruvians can no longer easily afford "maids"
because the "maids" are working at decent paying jobs, that will be real progress.

All who oppose this idea is are communist!  If Asia gets the Disney tax revenue it will be a HUGE boost. Watch if this happens .. Disney will take over that region and with their powerful influence and NOTHING will be built near it that makes Disney look bad. This includes a heavily policed Panamericana Sur.  This is absolutely fantastic news. I sincerlly hope it happens.

# noname says :

believe it or not, I feel very sorry to see the usual Peru's detractors almost bleeding to death after reading this wornderful news...  as I have been saying all this time... you cannot cover the sun with one finger... whether you like it or not.. whether you accept it or not... whether you dig ir or not...  Peru is finally emerging from misery and is emerging quick! you just wait to see what's going to happen after the rest of the world get back to it's feet... just wait.

Martin, you are right... Peru still long ways to get there, but is going there...  your comments show anger towards the country...  the way people drive here in Los Angeles is not so far from the way people drives in la panamericana sur ... .and the accidents here are equal as many or more... stupidiy is everywhere and I am sure you even have some at home aswell. so I commend you cool down and don't go to pieces, is not worth it to make yourself look so uncool. leave that to your poor presindent David N.

# Dpbaleno says :
6 April, 2009 [ 18:33 ]

Martin - Totally agree with you about Education , it is the key factor for development and progress. But, foreign investments like a Disney Park would give Goverment part of the money we require to construct schools and to pay teachers. Obviously money without "order" and "management" will not solve our problem of poverty. Lima is a good example of growing and poverty , maybe one or 2 or 3 Disney Parks will not change dramatically our current economic situation but they are good starting points for future big projects in other areas not necessarily related to the Entertainment Business, projects that can involve more young peruvian professionals who are looking for a job position abroad. "Maids", professionals working as a taxi drivers and our genius thinking in the American dream are just part of that lack of opportunities.

i don't still see the point of those people who believe that peru does't deserve to have an opportunity like this. how do  you think countries grows all around the globe?  do you think this is because of a miracle that befalls from heavens? we have to be realistic. if we want our country to grow and be strong we need this kind of investment ;on the contrary we are gonna be dreaming of what we could be or could've been. so i hope that this chance of  big investment could mature and become a reallity for the wellbeing of our country.so i hope that those pessimists reflect on what they are talking about.

At first I thought the idea preposterous, after I love Peru, but it far from developed enough for a park like Disney.

But after thinking about it, it makes perfect sense for a company with vision like Disney.  Thousands of tourists visit Cusco/Machu Piccu every year and growing.  The one complaint I ever hear from people that travel here is they didn't like Lima much.  Sorry but true, I love it for the restaurants and beautiful women, but most people coming thru as tourists don't get much. Now imagine you are a company with vision and you see this fast growing market, easily accessed by much of South America and many North American and European touists.  Drop a theme park in at a great beach location.  Now the vacation packages start rolling out... first stop Disney/Asia/Lima, then on to Machu Piccu... etc....The culture in Peru is ancient and although some might not like this it is very "marketable".

I could actually see it happening and it would be a bonanza for Peru and attract other investment from all over the place.  Iwill also sell everything and start buying up anything not nailed down in the region around Asia if this ever comes to pass.

geez rob you must be one of those brilliant minds from wall st, Disney has already bought or is the process of buying all the land it needs (If not the whole province).

they picked Peru because of its low construction, land and labor laws and of course LOCATION! (1-2, 3 hrs max hours from santiago, bs as., sao paulo altogether more than 100 million middle class potential customers), same reason fraport and bechtel wanted the airport, lima is a natural hub and the airport turned out to be a sweet investment.
The year round mild climate doesnt hurt either.

But the big bucks will be the HOTELS! and THE BEACH AND THE BARS AND CASINOS AND THE CRUISES !! the amusement park is fun but kids cant drink and bet. what I would do if i were you is buy a house anywhere in asia province and wait for the price to skyrocket (further). Im curious which port they'll buy.. hmmmm...thats another option.

In case you didnt know your own history, the state of florida (particularly the center and north) used to be one of the poorest regions along with most of the southeastern states when disney built its 2nd park after california (1950s), thats why they moved there (+-1964 ) cheap and abundant land and nice weather most of the year.

the disney park in one of the most developed countries in the world, certainly more the the usa, didnt work out so well. (paris)
BS AS woiuld have been a good choice, wonder why they didnt pick it, land prices or weather maybe.

Anyway this is great news for the lima region if it's true (it means another level of development and tourism). and if caballo loco pulls this one out he can be reelected as far as im concerned. the impact on construction, development, tourism, looooong etcs will be spectacular.

Of course a Disney theme park would attract more investors to this area. But I’m guessing it would turn the Asia beach more into an American thing than it already is. I hope they make it different than other Disney parks, and consider the rich Peruvian cultural history.

Economical growth is a good for a developing country as Peru but it makes me sad it come with the typical American BS. Like Disney hard rock cafés  etc. On the other hand if Americans and other tourists want to spend their money in these places, why stop them?

I woudnt worry about how far from lima it would be, obviously lots of things would need to change in order to keep the city organize , clean and peaceful in the surroundings.. The only thing that would piss me off , would be if the people in charge over there gets all RACIST about hiring employees... dont try to give the image that you dont represent... dont hire just "gringuitos limenos" whities from lima.. caucasian people.. but be DIVERSE instead!.. like in the original DIsney and DisneyWorld, if you've been there.. you'll se all kinds of people..all ethnicities..so DONT SEGREGATE! - Thats all i think!!

Disney rubbishes Peru theme park plans

The Walt Disney Company has flatly denied it was evaluating a new project in South America, according to reports emerging from the region.

Peru's El Comercio newspaper recently posted an article stating the entertainments conglomerate was planning a multi-billion dollar development south of the country's capital, Lima.

While blogs and other dailies have speculated the possibilities of a theme park in Peru, one of the country's leading news agencies subsequently reported that Disney had no interest in building one of its iconic theme parks in the region.

Peru.com cited Maria Adela Lavalle, head of Disney's corporate communications in Latin America, as stating: "We completely deny the construction of a theme park in Peru."

I can't blelieve how certain people can be so stupid.  Wether they want the disney park in Peru or don't, they only look for the opportunity to show their own life frustrations... thought this blog was for smart and emotionally balanced people (not the majority), I better get out of here may be contagious!

Hopefully this project will materialize in the near future. Peru has a lot of potential to exploit its tourism. Also it will be great and estimulate the local economy and perhaps improve the education. Why not a Disney in Peru at least is a signal that has potential despite its lack of a good infraestructure.Perhaps the government and busiessmans will make improvements and investment in order to improve the infraestructure.
I am not pessimistic but a similar news or rumors were spread during the first government of Alan Garcia in an article that appeared in Caretas during the 80's. Saying all of the above i really hope that Peru makes the jump to become a better society.Of course with education, inclusion, tolerance and lots of work Peru can aspire to be part of the First World. It is time for the peruvians to feel worth  it to aspire to a better life.

Foreign investors look for areas to build theme parks in Peru

  • Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Mercedes Araoz. Photo: ANDINA / Jorge Paz.
  • Lima, Apr. 07 (ANDINA).- Foreign investors are interested in building theme parks in Peru and some are already trying to identify potential areas for such projects, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Mercedes Araoz announced today.

"We have recently been in touch with investors who are looking for areas for such projects, and we hope that these private initiatives come to fruition," she said.

Last year, the Colombian company Eduparques, Divercity creator, a theme park in Bogota, announced that will build an amusement park in Peru with investments of ten million dollars.

Araoz added that Peruvian investors are interested in investing in a tourism aquarium project in northern Lima, and they are currently looking for the propitious land.

"There are interesting projects and we are providing all the support for the development of these new investments," she said.

In turn, Tourism Deputy Minister Pablo Lopez de Romana said that Arab investors are also looking for projects in the sector as Italian entrepreneurs who have great expectations by investing in resorts in northern Peru.

David N. is very ignorant. i am from peru and i think those who appose this are unintelligent. the poor class of peru is one of the classes that celebrates the most, meaning that they have fun as much as they can, even if it means not eating for a while. now this idea could greatly improve perus economy more than it already is. a country isnt underdeveloped for a theme park. besides, south and central americans will go to that park because it is nearer, meaning that the U.S companies will get money too. i bet David N. hasnt even been to peru, just saying what he "learns" from the internet

what a wonderful opportunity for Peru to develope more into the tourist business. Walt disney Park in latinamerica, sound great. They are in Japan, france and the third will be in southamerica. Many people because of the money, or to get a visa travel they can not came to ?america. Now, once there will open in lima, Peru a disneyland; many people around suthamerica will go there because we as a latinamerican people don't need a special visa to travel, just a passport. and the expenses of the trip will be much cheaper.
congratulation disney company and thank you for choose us.
Viva el Peru carajo.....!!!

It would be the smartest thing to do. Location, location and location… Peru is in not only the most logical country geographically and archeologically of all South America to make this happen, but also the most suitable due to their current strong economic status in the region.  First, surrounding countries would not need the visa (which is cumbersome for most countries in the world to get in order to come to the USA). There is plenty to see in Peru and South American countries. Once you’re there, take advantage of the trip, go to Cuzco (Machu Picchu ruins, Inca Trail), Nazca Lines, Iquitos (Amazon), Asia-Lima, and Lima city which you will find the most delicious dishes you ever had, you guys don’t know Auguste Escoffier, "The Chef of Kings and The King of Chefs," whom after much contemplation, decreed that only three nations have varied and comprehensive national cuisines: France, Peru and China. Last but not least, the majestic Andes. Talk about getting the biggest bang per buck! In addition, only a couple of hours away, you could be in Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, Chile’s Eastern Islands, Colombia’s Santa Marta, Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro… need more? One would be wrong to say they don’t have money. You don’t need to be a millionaire to go to DL a couple of times a year. Second, Peru has been growing consistently for the past 8 years, no terrorists, modern and colonial cities with modern transportation and very affordable for everybody.Multi millionaire corporate contracts for 6 brand new hydroelectric power plants which will even be exporting energy to Brazil. One of the goals in Peru is that public transportation will be powered by gas only in the short future, because they have more than enough of natural gas resources.“El Metropolitano” which is one the most modern public transportation in South America will be completed in less than a year.13 new oil exploration contracts with The Norwegian company IOC.Japanese, American, Canadian and more developed nations are already looking into creating the largest multimodal maritime megaterminal in the island of San Lorenzo because of their location. The Olmos Project will completed soon which is a megaproject using the tunnel boring machine (TBM) to construct the Trans-Andean Tunnel, which I think is the first phase for the megaterminal. Even today, when the world’s economy is shrinking, Peru maintains its growth. So, do not worry for Peruvian economy or sophistication, yeah they have been ready for Disney.

By the way, Disneyland already tried to acquire Peru Lima’s Zoo, but it was rejected due to the enormous archeological area involved in it. The Peruvian National Cultural Institute was forced to decline Disneyland’s offer.
Smile
