Peru has an extraordinary ornithological diversity with new species being discovered frequently. Hummingbirds, for instance, is one of the broadest in the country, with over 120 different birds recorded so far.
According to Tambopata Lodge’s website, “hummingbirds are small birds, ranging from a tiny 2.2 grams in weight to up to 20 grams among larger species. They are remarkable for their ability to hover in mid-air when feeding, by flapping their wings extremely rapidly.”
They are also the only birds that are able to fly backward because of their unique way to move the wings. However, they are unable to walk, they use their feet just for perching.
“To date, more than 1,800 bird species have been recorded within Peruvian territory, representing almost 20% of the entire planet’s known species. Of these, more than 300 species are endemic to Peru”, the website said, adding that in Tambopata more than 630 species have been identified.
