Conde Nast Traveler sat down with chef Gastón Acurio to find out which restaurants are a must visit while in Peru.
Acurio owns more than 40 Peruvian restaurants around the world, which he has founded in a 25-year long career in the gastronomic sector. “Many consider him responsible for transforming the country into the culinary destination it is today”, the aforementioned media said.
In Lima, this chef recommends La Picantería for having lunch. According to him, here you can find the best ceviche in town. Then, he said you can go to Isolina in Barranco to try some of Peru’s classics, and end the day at a traditional tavern like Juanito.
If you’re traveling to Arequipa, La Nueva Palomino is Acurio’s favorite joint. Here, you can enjoy lunch based on family recipes.
Where to eat in Cusco according to this chef? “Start by eating your way through the Mercado Central, and don’t leave without trying cooked corn and handmade cheese, which is freshly made high in the Andes before they bring it into town”, Conde Nast Traveler wrote.
Finally, in Iquitos, Acurio prefers food directly from the Belen market where you can find alligator meat and grilled slugs
