The Peruvian “Black Whiskey” has secured the 9th spot on the list of the best 50 whiskies globally, according to The Fifty Best. It is an unbiased guide for refined taste.

Black Whiskey has earned numerous accolades and medals in international competitions since 2021 with Andean purple corn as its star ingredient. It has been praised and reviewed by spirits experts worldwide. Today, the Don Michael distillery is gearing up to conquer new markets with the vision of positioning Andean Whiskey as Peru’s flagship spirit.

“We are very proud to have achieved the goal of producing 180,000 bottles of Black Whiskey in 2023. We plan to fill 3,000 barrels of Andean Whiskey by 2026. Don Michael was born to offer the highest quality Peruvian-origin Andean whiskey. Today, we are present in 12 countries, including Germany, Canada, the United States, Japan, Taiwan, Switzerland, Canada, and Peru. We are in provinces such as Pasco, Cajamarca, Cuzco, and Pucallpa, as well as in the country’s most renowned bars and restaurants. Rafael, La Mar, Central, and Maido are just examples of places where we aim to continue captivating palates,” says Daiana Milon Mayer, Co-Founder & Master Blender of the distillery.

The Don Michael distillery proposes the creation of a Designation of Origin (D.O.) for Andean Whiskey. This initiative aims to further support the position of Andean Whiskey as Peru’s new flagship spirit. Additionally, it seeks to inspire new entrepreneurs to explore whiskey production using the rich variety of Andean corn and grains. This challenge will strengthen the industry and contribute to the international reputation of Peruvian Whiskey.

Among the most notable achievements are:

  • Top 10 in the ranking of the world’s best whiskies in 2021.
  • In 2022, Black Whiskey won “Best Whiskey in the World” in New York.
  • Featured in three publications in Forbes Magazine.
  • Named “Whiskey of the Year” at the USA Spirits Ratings 2023.
  • 9th Place and Gold medal in The Fifty Best in the category of World Whiskeys 2024.

This latest achievement is particularly significant, as 14 countries, including Peru, were evaluated by expert judges in a blind tasting, reflecting international recognition of Black Whiskey’s exceptional quality.

“To be recognized in the industry is an honor that fills us with pride and motivates us always to give our best. This latest award was granted by the renowned wine and spirits guide Fifty Best, which conducts impartial blind tastings and, based on the results, shares the ranking of the 50 best whiskies in the world. The simple fact that Black Whiskey is considered in this prestigious list continues to put Andean Whiskey on the world map and reinforces our position as one of the best whiskies globally,” comments Daiana.

The Don Michael distillery has achieved unprecedented success with Black Whiskey in the world of spirits and is contributing to redefining the industry of Peruvian Whiskey.
