The Ministry of the Environment (Minam) plans to formalize before the end of this year the creation of the Grau Tropical Sea National Reserve, which is an area of 116,000 hectares located on the sea off the regions of Piura and Tumbes.
“Gabriel Quijandría, Deputy Minister of Strategic Development of Natural Resources of Minam, explained that the project is ending the phase of citizen participation with all the sectors involved”, according to Gestión.
Quijandría told Gestión that initially this area was going to be a Reserved Zone but now it will be a National Reserve.
“Oil exploitation rights have already been granted in that area. These rights, being pre-existing, have to be respected when the National Reserve is established,” Quijandría noted, referring to the fact that this reserve includes an area that has been granted for oil exploitation.
