The fossil of a prehistoric mammal was found in Peru while a street was being paved

In Cusco, the fossil belonging to a prehistoric mammal was found while municipal workers were paving a street.

The fossil belongs to an extinct prehistoric mammal that lived four million years ago, said El Heraldo, explaining that it was extracted safely with techniques to avoid causing damages to it.

“Jorge Luis Gamarra, a resident engineer, informed the Andean agency that the extraction took place on Wednesday in a delicate way because it remained under the concrete cement”, El Heraldo said.

Also, archaeologists from Cusco’s Culture Department reported that this finding will corroborate the chronology of the Espinar area. The fossil could belong to a toxodon (which existed millions of years ago), a genus of mammals in the Toxodontidae family.

“In the course of the following days, it will be identified. Meanwhile, it will be moved to a space in the municipality for proper conservation and subsequently will be displayed to the population,” said Jorge Luis Gamarra.

The Espinar province, located south of Cusco, above 4,000 meters of altitude, is known for paleontological fossil findings.
