Her official name is Mari Elisabeth Morgan Morgan but she prefers to be called Mari Solari (her late husband’s last name). She believes that at this moment in Peru, real art is not appreciated and that souvenirs can’t be considered art.
She has owned Las Pallas store for 33 years in Barranco, Lima, where she sells popular Peruvian art and crafts.
“Every time there is less of the traditional, there is more synthetic”, Solari told Perú 21 in an interview where she speaks about her life and her opinion on art. “There is less and less popular art”, she continued.
According to her, souvenirs are not the same as art since they have a very “low level” and it is what is sold and promoted the most currently in Peru, especially because of tourism.
Solari believes that there are almost no people working on traditional art in the country.
