The Inca country is the only Latin American nation that, in spite of having classified, will not compete in Pyeongchang 2018.

Today the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea have begun but Peru will not be attending, reported El Comercio, in spite of having classified.
The Peruvian Olympic Committee (COP) decided, days before the deadline, not to enroll Ornella Oettl Reyes and Jeremy Denat Rodríguez, although both of the athletes achieved the classification score required by the International Ski Federation (FIS).
Rosario Delgado, president of COP announced that after a technical analysis about previous participation and the level of development achieved in winter sports by Peruvians, it was decided not to participate, she said in a letter sent on January 24.

Oettl, along with two other team members had made history when they became the first Peruvians to compete in an Olympic winter game in 2010 in Canada. She also competed in Russia 2014, but this time, she will not be participating.

“I quit the university for a year to dedicate myself entirely to classifying and competing. We make a lot of sacrifices and all we expected was for the Peruvian Olympic Committee to comply with the registration. They left us without any choice although we were going to take care of our own expenses”, Ornella told El Comercio.
In Rodríguez’s case, more dreams have been shattered. At 21-years-old he has specialized in alpine skiing and when he solicited an answer from COP “they closed the doors and only responded that there were no classified athletes for the Olympics”, according to this media.
