After establishing that Peru is to use the Japanese-Brazilian digital TV standard, which among other advantages will allow television on cellular phones, the Andean country's Ministry of Communications (MTC) stated decoders would begin being sold for $28.

The MTC explained that within six months Peruvians would be able to begin purchasing these decoders and be ready to enjoy the benefits of digital TV.

It was reported that these decoders would work with everything from black and white TVs to LCDs and plasmas.

"Currently these decoders are not on the market but they will be available as soon as the implementation process begins, which we hope will be in the next six months," said MTC representatives.

Jorge Cuba, the vice minister of communications explained that the Japanese-Brazilian standard had been chosen, among other reasons, for its low cost.

Other decoders cost over $50, said Cuba.

He explained that decoders for the European digital standard cost $55 while decoders for the U.S. and Chinese standards cost $89.90 and $150 respectively.
