Peru | 9 June, 2006 [ 12:01 ]Emergency zone declared for Ubinas area
The government declared the area surrounding the Ubinas volcano as an emergency zone after another recent increase of activity and ordered the permanent relocation of those residing in its neighborhood.
The State will give free land to 2,000 inhabitants of the provinces Mariscal Nieto and Sanchez Cerro in the department of Moquegua.
480 families affected by the explosions of the volcano will be evacuated on Friday, said the director of the National Institute for Civil Defense, Juan Luis Podestá.
The goernment granted 1.5 mil. dollars for this undertaking.
Last Saturday the emergency level was raised to "orange alert" (medium intensity) , after registering several explosions starting on May 31 that included a lava expulsion as high as 200 meters.
The toxic emanations of the volcano have already caused the death of a large number of llamas and alpacas.
The Ministry of Health announced that after the increase of seismic activity and before a possible eruption of the volcano, arrangements were made to relocate settlers to the area near Candagua.
