Meteorite Fragment from Carancas, Puno, Peru Sold for US$500

(LIP-ir) -- On October 4, Peru's Andina News Agency reported that Michael Farmer, a meteorite collector, admitted to having bought and taken 300 grams of meteorite fragments out of Carancas, Peru.

Farmer was accused by Peru's police of having taking the meteorite out of Puno, Peru without permission. The meteorite collector responded by saying he had legally bought the fragments from the townspeople and stated that he had bought many of the fragments from the police themselves.

According to Andina, Farmer stated that a private collector had purchased 9.85 grams of the meteorite over the internet. The fragment was purchased on ebay from a seller identifying himself as Erwin with a web site on www.bolivia-minerals.com.

Upon logging onto the ebay website and entering 180165238220 in the search bar, the ended transaction for the chondrite meteorite can be seen. It was being offered for the price of US$500. The seller reports to sell high quality minerals to private collectors and museums all over the world.

Andina News Agency reported that in a telephone conversation with Michael Farmer, he stated that he had donated 50 grams of the meteorite to laboratories in the United States, Japan and Canada.

It was reported that Farmer was to sell each gram of the meteorite for US$50

Yeap: I do remember putting this (senario) out there before and to the guy himself Michael Farmer(if it was him) in other posts, only to be told by him that, his motive s to basicly what his (Interest,Intentions) were specificly for Scientific Reseach only, yeah.. (my foot) these people think we are stupid, when they try and (B/S) the (Trues). We all know what their Line of Business is all about and know what their main intention are.If he ever try to come into my country and do that,i would only to happy to boot their asses( right where it hurt and right back to where ever hold (crater)they come out from) if i was able to get to them first. Their Profit Pirates at the demises of Others. there only out for themselves. They done the same in other Counties,so as i have mentioned before, this is of no surprise. He would make (10x) more then what he paid the Peruvian people for over time. They & He went there for one reason only ($$$$$$$$$$$) otherwise he would'nt be doing what he does. I would give $10mil to these people just to help them Rebuild their lives,to what they have Lost in the Natural Dessastor for FREE and build them Home.

Main body of this meteorite is now about few meters below bottom of this crater .

You know, it isn't illegal to buy or remove from Peru rocks - or a meteorite for that matter.

I think I pointed out before that no-one in that village or area was going to get a better deal - they simply do not have the experience or know-how to deal with the meteorite.

I think it is telling that no effort has been made to get the meteorite out.

If Peru doesn't really care about the fate of the meteorite, then why do they care if someone else collects fragments for sale?

Sr Farmer vendió uno de los meteoritos a otro concesionario. El concesionario hizo muchas de las piezas. Esto es lo que para vender las piezas en Ebay.

This is old news.

I would like an update on the crater, though - are they still using it as a toilet, or have they used it for ground zero in a new cemetery?

What an opportunity lost! SHAME!

Yes, Drew, it is old news.  That's why it is dated October, 2007.

Drew,

Is your life so pathetic that you need an update on a old meteorite crater?

OR

Do you get perverse pleasure trashing Peru like your buddy MF?

The people in Peru did the best they could with the resources they had. End of Story.

*HINT* - Ask your doctor to increase your dosage. I recommend you get out and socialize with the other patients.

I think perhaps the radiation from exposure to extra-terrestrial objects has fried the brains of Randal and Michael.

I hope they both find the help they need.

Just crawl back in your hole. Quietly.
