The Collegiate “A” of the National Criminal Chamber sentenced this Tuesday to life imprisonment to ten members of the Sendero Luminoso leaders -among them Abimael Guzmán- for the mediated authorship of the attack on Tarata Street, in Miraflores, on July 16. 1992.
The criminals that were sentenced to life imprisonment were Abimael Guzmán Reynoso, Elena Yparraguirre, Óscar Ramírez Durand “Feliciano”, Osmán Morote Barrionuevo, María Pantoja Sánchez, Laura Zambrano Padilla, Florindo Flores Hala “Artemio”, Margot Liendo Gil, Edmundo Cox Beuzeville and Florentino Cerrón Cardoso, according to information from El Comercio.
“Likewise, they must pay 2 million soles to the victims’ relatives”, the media explained. They also added that two of the defendants did not receive a conviction. “Elizabeth Cárdenas Huayta was acquitted after serving a 15-year prison sentence. Regarding Moisés Límaco, who traveled to France on June 11 this year and has not yet returned, his sentence was left in reserve for being a fugitive”, they said.
Also, all of the defendants were acquitted of the crime of illicit drug trafficking.
Sendero Luminoso, also known as the Communist Party of Peru is a terrorist organization that sought to replace Peru’s democratic institutions. In 1980 they unleashed terrorism in the country, until their leader, Abimael Guzmán Reynoso was captured in 1992.
