The Grupo de Lima is requesting the United Nations (UN) to take action to prevent the ongoing deterioration that exists in Venezuela.

This was decided in a meeting held in Santiago, Chile, where they analyzed once more the situation the South American country is facing and the urgent need to provide humanitarian assistance to the population and migrants.

“Through a statement, it recalled that the aforementioned country is going through a humanitarian, political, economic and moral crisis generated by ‘the illegitimate and dictatorial regime of Nicolás Maduro’ that constitutes a threat to international peace and security, with regional and global effects”, El Peruano wrote.

In this context, the members of the Lima Group “urge the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the General Assembly and the Security Council to take action to prevent the progressive deterioration of peace and security, and provide urgent humanitarian assistance to the population and migrants from Venezuela”.

The governments of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela reiterated their recognition and support for the National Assembly of Venezuela and the president in charge Juan Guaidó.

The Lima Group (Grupo de Lima) also condemned “the systematic violation of human rights committed by the illegitimate regime of Nicolás Maduro” and demanded the immediate release of political prisoners and the cessation of the practices of arbitrary detention, torture and violent action by the paramilitary groups.
