According to Fresh Plaza, this outcome is the result of “a decades-long collaboration with Peruvian researchers that is still going strong.”
Scientists John Bamberg, Alfonso Del Rio, and Jiwan Palta work side by side with Peru’s International Potato Center (CIP), the Instituto Nacional de Innovación Agraria (INIA), and Peruvian farmers. They created a new potato variety called Wiñay, which means “to grow” in Quechua.
“The frost-resistant potato is long and thin with brown skin and yellow flesh and is grown for the fresh market. It was developed to be cultivated in Peru’s Altiplano at elevations of up to 14,000 feet above sea level”, Fresh Plaza wrote.
