Picodi conducted a study in which they analyzed the prices of eight basic products in 52 countries and compared them with the current minimum wage to determine if it is possible to live with this income.
“To carry out the research, a basic food basket was used, composed of eight products whose prices are constantly observed and updated throughout the world: bread, milk, eggs, rice, cheese, meat, fruits and vegetables”, explained La República.
Picodi also determined that the basic food basket in Peru costs an average of 273.76 soles and includes: 10 liters of milk; 10 bars of 500g bread; 1.5kg of rice; 20 egg units; 1kg of cheese; 6kg of chicken and beef; 6kg of fruits; and 8kg of vegetables.
Since April 1, 2018, the minimum wage in the Andean country increased to 930 soles (approximately $279 US dollars), and by earning this amount, the food basket only represents 33.3% of the income of a single person.
In conclusion, according to Picodi, it is possible to live in Peru by earning a minimum wage.
