The entire Regional Council of Junín unanimously approved an ordinance that will prohibit single-use plastic containers within the region.
“The initiative, which arose within the Natural Resources and Environmental Management Department, proposes to progressively restrict the delivery and use of plastic bags, expanded polystyrene food containers, also called technopor, to reduce their use in the region”, Gestión informed last Thursday.
Rubén Luna Álvarez, manager of Natural Resources and Environmental Management of the Junín Region, revealed that more than 178,000 tons of solid waste are generated annually in the region, while each person produces half a kilo of waste per day.
After the approval of the ordinance, a 30-day regulation must enter, considering that it is backed by Law 28611, General Environmental Law.
In addition, an awareness campaign for the proper use of biodegradable packaging will initiate soon.
