A luminous object was seen from several locations in the region on Wednesday around 6:40 p.m. It is still unknown its exact impact point.
The event caused fear among inhabitants of various districts in Puno. People assured they had seen a flash in the sky, and called the police and firefighters department.
It was not only the sighting. Neighbors in Tulun and Carimatayan villages affirmed they heard an explosion after the fall of the alleged meteorite. The same was declared in Pichacani.
“I just saw it. That happened as if it were a rocket, the sky looked as if it were day time. It exploded in the air, and after a minute I felt a strong rumble as if there was an impact on earth. I went to walk the zone, but I never found anything”, explain Tomas Jahuira Nerace, witness of what could be a meteorite.
Jahuira said that he was about to call her daughter when suddenly an object with a huge multicolored luminous tail, headed towards the mountains and exploded in the air. “Then there was an impact and made the earth shake”, added.
Marcahui area, high zone of Santa Rosa community in Pichacani’s district (South of Puno), is the probable location where the meteorite would have fallen. A large number of people of near areas mobilized to the possible impact zone.
However, the police department and civil defense didn’t found the location of the unidentified object.
It’s presumed that it would have fallen in the mountains, more than 6,000 meters above sea level. Authorities recommended the population to not approach to avoid radiation.
