Yesterday the world commemorated the International Day Against Child Labor and the Ministry of Labor (Mintra) in Peru informed that there are 920,229 children working in the country between the ages 5 and 13.
According to information from El Comercio, this figure means that 17.6% of Peruvian minors work on some sort of economic activity.
“Of these, 241,998 are adolescents between 13 and 17 years of age and they perform work that exceeds 50 hours per week, which is considered dangerous work.”, wrote El Comercio, who obtained the information from the National Household Survey (Enaho) of 2017, cited by Mintra.
The Child and Adolescent Code establishes that the minimum age for performing any type of light work in Peru is 12-years-old. For other working modalities, the minimum required age is 14.
“As an exception, authorization will be granted after the age of 12, provided that the work to be performed does not harm their health or development, or interfere with or limit their attendance at educational centers and allow them to participate in orientation or vocational training programs”, El Comercio wrote, adding that the working hours must not exceed four on a daily basis, or 24 weekly.
This problem is not only Peru’s. According to the International Labor Organization, there are 152 million children under the age of 17 in the world who are victims of child labor.
