One donor can save up to 10 lives.
90% of organ transplants registered in Peru, from 1969 to the present, were performed by surgeons of the Social Health Insurance (EsSalud), adding up to more than 7,000 benefited so far.
“According to official figures, 3,255 of these highly complex interventions allowed saving the same number of people suffering from irreversible kidney failure”, said La República on Wednesday.
Among other interventions, 2,364 people have recovered their vision with cornea transplants; 1,195 have received bone marrow transplants for leukemia; 305 have received livers; 102 hearts; and 21 lung transplants.
On May 23 the Day of the Donor of Organs and Tissues was commemorated, and therefore, specialists from EsSalud asked the population to allow the use of the organs of their relatives, if in life they expressed their willingness to be donors, wrote La República.
“Organ transplantation is a medical procedure in which an organ is removed from one body and placed in the body of a recipient, to replace a damaged or missing organ”, explains Wikipedia. The website also says that organs that have been successfully transplanted include the heart, kidneys, brain, liver, lungs, pancreas, intestine, and thymus. Tissues include bones, tendons corneas, skin, heart valves, nerves, and veins.
One donor can save up to 10 people’s lives by donating their 2 corneas, their heart, liver, 2 lungs, 2 kidneys, their pancreas, skin, and bones.
