At least 5,000 alpacas have died as a result of the cold wave that hits the highlands of the Andean province of Caylloma, in the southern Peruvian region of Arequipa, according to information from Infobae.
“The mayor of Caylloma, Rómulo Tinta Cáceres, told the official agency Andina that the mortality of these South American camelids could increase in the coming days, especially in breeding and pregnant females, since it has snowed in the area”, informed the aforementioned media.
In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture distributed a few days ago 11,000 bales of hay, and a few days before, the Regional Agriculture Management delivered another 9,000 bales, in order to prevent the death of animals for lack of food.
“Tinta Cáceres expressed concern over the reports of the meteorology agency, which said that snowfall and low temperatures will increase next week”, you can read in Infobae, who adds that the low temperatures can exacerbate the serious problem facing hundreds of farmers.
These low temperatures also affected humans, especially children and the elderly, who have suffered from pneumonia.
