The presidents of Bolivia and Peru met last Saturday in a town on their common border, where they inaugurated a Care Center with which they seek to facilitate the transit of people, merchandise, and vehicles.
The infrastructure located on seven hectares of the Peruvian side of Desaguadero, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, was built in a time-lapse of three years but had been agreed in 2004, said Chron yesterday.
The Desaguadero is the main border crossing where 572,000 people circulated last year and the control is “chaotic,” said Vizcarra, according to Chron.
This media informs also that Bolivia and Peru have a border of just over a thousand kilometers and despite their common history, they have not achieved substantial progress in border integration. Nevertheless, projects such as this border transit center and the bi-oceanic train between the Atlantic and the Pacific could improve the relations, trade, among other aspects between the nations.
The border transit center had a cost of 40 million dollars, and President Vizcarra said that another one is needed in the Amazon jungle.
This is the second time the new President of Peru meets with Evo Morales. They also agreed to prioritize a joint plan to decontaminate Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, at 3,812 meters above sea level and shared by both countries in the Andean highlands region.
