For the first time ever, Peru will provide sustained technological support in the health field for countries of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), especially regarding the production of serums against spider bites and the treatment of some diseases such as multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.
The Director of the National Institute of Health, Anibal Velasquez, pointed out that the technological assistance will be discussed in the meeting of representatives of health institutes of Unasur countries, being held in Lima from March 9 to 11.
In this event, the Network of National Institutes of Health of Unasur will be created, aimed at identifying the strengths and weaknesses of institutions of every country in order to determine the technological cooperation action plan to be implemented.
“We have production plants of immunosera against snake and spider venom and given that Chile does not have them, we export to that country and even on the occasion of the earthquake we have donated to this country 1,000 doses, because many walls have fallen so there must be many spiders,” he added.
He emphasized that Peru can contribute with its experience in the treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and bartonellosis, a disease that only occurs in Peru, but that may happen in other neighboring countries.
