The director of the Civil defense department in Arequipa, Alfredo Siu Delgado, has asked for a greater allocation of resources to continue with aid shipments to the affected areas surrounding the Ubinas volcano in the Moquega region in southern Peru.
Siu said they require an additional minimum of S./ 30,000 soles for trucks and fuel. He explained that so far the National Institute of Civil defense (Indeci) has assigned S./23,500 for relief aid, but these resources have run out on June 8. “Now there's even a greater need”, he added.
Until now 22 truckloads of aid have been sent from Arequipa to the emergency region.
The official informed that a light tower has been requested by the Civil defense in Arequipa. The tower will be transferred today because a crane is needed to load it on an Army truck.
Members of the scientific committee will soon evaluate the lastest seismic data and changes of the Ubinas volcano.
Increased activity prompted the evacuation of 408 villagers over the weekend, officials said.
Seismic activity has been mounting since February at the volcano, about 470 miles southeast of the Peruvian capital of Lima. Ubinas erupted April 14, sending a column of ash some 2,600 feet into the air.
Tents, blankets and food were distributed to the 144 families who evacuated to a camp six miles from their village, Jose Acosta, a Civil Defense Institute official, said Saturday.
Another 150 families were evacuated yesterday. The villagers will be allowed to return to their homes if the threat decreases.
Winds have carried smoke and volcanic ash into the neighboring highland region of Puno, where residents have complained of headaches and stomachaches.
