Lima, Peru Begins Campaign Against Transit/Traffic Violations

(LIP-ir) -- In an attempt to get motorists to value the importance of respecting crosswalks, the Municipality of Lima has begun a campaign on Abancay Avenue.

Using mimes on street corners and fliers stressing the importance of laws, Lima's community is attempting to get public transportation drivers to; not pick up and drop off passengers in the middle of the street, to keep their doors closed and to use the public transportation lane.

At this stage, the campaign is focusing on preventing motorists from breaking laws. In the next stage, drivers will be severely penalized for breaking these simple yet extremely important laws.

It has been planned that computerized surveillance equipment will be used to make sure motorists comply.

In a surveillance pilot program, 152 transit infractions were photographed in 2 hours. The report was as follows: 54 counts of ignoring pedestrian crosswalks, 43 counts of dropping and picking up passengers in the middle of the street, 41 counts of vehicles in motion with open doors and 14 counts of public transportation drivers in inappropriate lanes.

Perhaps giving the mime a loaded  M-16 would be good start...........
On a more real note..........I think a drivers license here is about 400 Soles and so you can figure nobody has that or the education that comes with it. Perhaps the government may consider making this document more affordable and probably start by issuing their own police valid driving documents.

This is a good start but could be much better.  Traffic in Lima sucks and no one respects the traffic laws. Cars won't stop at the stop signs, drivers drive in the middle of 2 lanes, extremely old cars that should not be on the road are still around polluting the air, etc. There are so many things drivers get away with and seems like no one not even Lima's alcalde (governor) cares about it. TRAFFIC LAWS NEED TO BE SEVERELY REINFORCED BIG TIME!!! Someone needs to take responsibility and do something about it NOW!!!!!

Henry Calderon, Urban Development Consultant, after spending 6 months in Lima and using every type of Transportation in Lima, urges the Mayor of Lima and their supporters to Implemment the  Action Transit System Studies undertaken many years ago. With over 3 million cars in the system and potentially growing to 5 million in 5 years and no new plans to built new roads and underground subway systems, it my opinion that the 3P should now be in effect. There is many organizations in the World that will like to be part of this venture. The Peruvian people will be one of the partners. It is good to hear that some level of Transit Management is on the works, this aspect will encourage investors that this is a good environment to invest. The investment opportunity it is now not tomorrow.
