Peru: indigenous people celebrate the repeal of the rejected decrees

Indigenous groups in Peru are currently celebrating the repeal of the decrees N° 1090 and 1064, which affected their rights to use their ancestral land.

Yesterday evening, a few minutes after the news of the repeal started to spread, groups of natives were seen jumping, dancing, singing and celebrating by the roads they had been blocking.

Amazonian Indian groups say this is a "historic day" for indigenous people, since “it shows that our demands and our battles were just," according to Daysi Zapata, leader of ice president of Aidesep (Inter Ethnics Associacion for the Development of the Peruvian Jungle), the Amazon Indian confederation that led the protests.

Peru's Prime Minister Yehude Simon said that the repeal will not jeopardize the US-Peru FTA, but has also made clear that he will quit once the agreements with the natives have been completed, since there are still another 7 decrees to discuss.
