The father can use this permit from the day the baby is born until the mother is discharged by the medical center.

The Labor Commission of Congress approved a bill that extends from 4 to 10 days the days of paternity leave that would be granted to a worker, both in the public and private sectors.

“It’s a big step to strengthen the bond between father and daughter or son during the first days of her or his life,” said Congresswoman Úrsula Letona via Twitter, according to Gestión.

In order for this bill to be applied, the project needs ratification in Congress and then it has to be promulgated by the Executive.
Gestión informed that this new paternity leave would begin the day the baby is born and will end as soon as the mother is discharged from the medical center. The bill “seeks to give similar rights to those that exist in other countries.”, wrote Gestión.
In Uruguay and Ecuador, the paternity leave is of 10 days. In Paraguay and Venezuela, it’s 14, and in Colombia 8 days.

Other countries, such as Iceland, grant 90 days. The United States of America gives 84, Sweden 70, and Finland 54.

For women, the maternity leave is of 14 weeks in Peru, which consists of a break from work to take proper care of the newborn child and remains paid.
