The 21-year-old Peruvian surfer María Fernanda Reyes came in first at the Rincón Surf Fest in Puerto Rico, for the second time in a row.
Maria Fernanda Reyes learned to surf in Makaha beach, Miraflores. Growing up, she’d help her mother sell shaved ice along the boardwalk. Now, she is one of Peru’s top surfing talents, representing Peru in the Pan American Games 2019. She won the silver medal in the competition. As a professional surfer she travels the world for competitions, bringing back accolades left and right.
On November 18, she came in first, for the second time in a row, at the Rincón Surf Fest, which is part of World Surf League’s (WSL) Women’s Longboard Tour. Reyes beat out US surfer Callie Summerlin, with 12.23 points against Summerlin’s 8.44.
Just prior to the competition in Puerto Rico, Reyes competed in Brazil where she came in runner-up at the WSL South America 2019 competition.
Peru is no stranger to winning surfing competitions. Recently, Piccolo Clemente became the longboard world champion.
