Two Peruvian pisco brands and Peruvian rum win medals in the international competition held virtually for the first time.
Craft distilleries have boomed worldwide, and Japan is no exception. Mamoru Tsuchiya is a worldwide leading whisky expert and has helped elevate Japan’s spirit and cocktail scene over the past decade. He heads the Japan Whisky Research Centre, which produces various events including the Tokyo Whisky Spirits Competition.
The spirit competition was first held last year in March, with 527 entries split across 126 categories (50% were whisky, 20% gin, 30% other spirits), with 180 judges.
The winners of this year’s Western spirits division were announced on June 18, and included three Peruvian spirit brands among the winners. There were 427 entries, and resulted in 12 Superior Gold winners, 79 Gold winners, 154 Silver winners, and 83 Bronze winners.
Peru’s Pisco Caravedo (the brand continues to sell as Pisco Porton in Peru) took the silver with their pisco Acholado. Tacama submitted their pisco Acholado and Mosto Verde Gran Demonio Italia, both of which won bronze. Peru’s Ron Millonario, which is produced in Chiclayo, submitted their Solera 15 Reserva and won the bronze.
This year’s competition was held remotely due to the pandemic and Japan’s state of emergency. 37 judges were shipped mini bottles of the spirits, meaning each judge was to do blind tasting of 50-60 spirits.
