A parliamentary committee in Peru approved a bill for the remediation of more than 8,000 environmental damages left by mining exploitation affecting several towns and territories in Peru.
As reported by the Commission of Andean, Amazonian, Afro-Peruvian, Environment and Ecology, the legal text groups ten projects presented by various congressmen and proposes to make more efficient the management of more than 8,000 environmental liabilities, according to information from Prensa Latina.
“The objective, the commission said, is to move towards the elimination of risks to ecosystems and the health of the population, affected by pollution, which implies legal modifications referred to the subject”, the aforementioned media wrote.
The project establishes that the Ministry of Energy and Mines should prioritize the identification, registration and remediation of mining liabilities located in the watersheds and prepare a National Plan that guarantees the repair of those classified as very high or high risk.
“The norm, if approved, will establish sanctions for those responsible for not remedying environmental damages, which may lead to the cancellation of mining concessions and the prohibition to re-operate, in case of breach of that obligation within a period of six years”, Prensa Latina reported.
