Ten months ago, a group of archaeologists found 140 mummified remains of children of between 5 and 14 years old in Huanchaquito-Las Llamas in Peru. Today, they believe that this site’s secrets are being revealed.
“The researchers stated that they firmly believed the children were part of a bloody child sacrifice ritual”, The Inquisitr wrote, adding that these scientists explained on a new study the possibilities that this might have been the cause of death of these individuals.
One of the reasons to believe that a ritual might have taken place is that the youth’s hearts were probably ripped from the person’s chest, which is evident from cut marks that are visible in their sternums.
“Analysis of the mummified remains revealed the ages of the children, and the scientists used radiocarbon dating to determine that the children lived at approximately 1450 A.D., a period when Huanchaquito-Las Llamas comprised part of the culture of the Chimu”, the aforementioned media said.
This discovery is considered to be the largest known mass child sacrifice site in the Americas.
The scientists additionally stated that “a thick layer of mud overlaying the burial sediments indicates that this mass killing was preceded, and perhaps inspired, by a major rainstorm or flood,” you can read in The Inquisitr.
