Ex-President Alberto Fujimori was discharged yesterday from the hospital after receiving treatment for cardiac arrhythmia.
“He is currently under observation”, his doctor Alejandro Aguinaga told AFP, adding that Fujimori was given a Holter monitor to record everything that happens with his heart, 24 hours a day.
Fujimori, 79, has been recently pardoned from a 25-year sentence for human right abuses. He has also been suffering for various health issues, being hospitalized several times due to problems with his heart.
The Ex-President’s health was a reason for current President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (PPK) to grant him the pardon, but some believe it to be a political maneuver to avoid being ousted by the Congress. PPK manifests that he granted the pardon for humanitarian reasons.
The release also took place amid a bitter feud between his two children, who are politically active (Keiko and Kenji) over his pardon.
Fujimori’s release has drawn a lot of criticism, especially from the victims during his 1990-2000 rule. Relatives of those affected are appealing the pardon to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in Costa Rica, and will hold a hearing on this case on February 2.
The IACHR is requesting the documents related to Fujimori’s pardon, but they haven’t still been handed over by the Peruvian State. The request includes the record prepared by the Penitentiary Medical Board on December 19, 2017, and the complete file on which the pardon is based that helped as a support to grant it.
