How a Search Engine Is Effectively Combating Deforestation in Peru

Share

Deforestation is a big problem in Peru, which is impacting the lives of people across Peru, as well as around the planet. But thanks to the work of grassroots organizations such as Ecosia, people are getting together to make a change.

“Each day, the land clears away, and we don’t see any forest anymore. So we are in need. We tend to cut down trees but don’t think about planting something back.”

According to Ecosia’s recent documentary, within the last 15 years, a million hectors of forests have been cut down within Peru. And most of Peru’s deforestation is driven by smallscale farmers who are trying to make a living.

New challenges that farmers are facing

Within Peru, farmers are noticing that there is also a lack of water due to climate change, which creates conflict between indigenous communities. This is also impacted by the lack of trees in the mountains.

Most villagers rely on firewood for cooking, but they are having to continually go farther in order to collect their firewood.

One indigenous farmer featured in Ecosia’s recent documentary explains that “Sometimes we lack a bit of awareness because of our lack of knowledge of the situation.”

According to Ecosia, “Farmers who have never met are helping one another by reforesting their land. Those who live at the top of a mountain depend on trees for cooking, heating and housing, but cutting down trees threatens the livelihood of farmers further inland. There are also more climatic extremes. Deforestation also creates more plagues and ruined harvests. This is a story about how we are all connected by trees.”

With the help of our partners at Progreso, these communities are now planting trees, for everyone’s benefit.
