Nurses in Peru Go On Strike

They are joining a strike that EsSalud doctors started on Tuesday, demanding increased wages and improved working conditions.

Peruvian nurses are joining the 48-hour strike maintained by doctors in the country to reject the privatization of Social Security Health (EsSalud) and request responses to their demands such as increased wages and improvements in working conditions, informed TelesurTV.

“The general secretary of the National Medical Union of Social Security of Peru (Sinamssop), César Portella, announced to local media that if the complaints are not resolved in the next few hours, they will start an indefinite national strike starting on April 12”, said this news website, adding that the increase in salaries they are requesting is of 25%.

Last Tuesday, a group of doctors from EsSalud protested in Lima, as well as others did so in health centers in the provinces.
Another reason for this strike is to reject the corruption that exists in these health facilities in Peru, wrote TelesurTV on Tuesday.
They are demanding that the State not privatize hospitals through what they have called tertiarization or even public or private associations”, said Jaime Herrera, a reporter from TelesurtV. “They’ve said that the State’s investment would go to third parties and not to the capacity and infrastructure of hospitals for the benefit of the users,” he continued.

Medical appointments, elective surgeries, and other services have been suspended, as was informed by Sinamssop. However, emergencies and critical situations are still being addressed, according to TelesurTV.
