The four submarines that belong to the Navy of Peru are currently being modernized in the workshops of the Industrial Services of the Navy (SIMA PERU), through a joint work with the German shipyard Thyssenkrupp Marine System GmbH.

According to the official statement of the Ministry of Defense, cited by Perú 21, these works are carried out with technical assistance and technology transfer from the German shipyard.

“It’s the first time that a task of this nature has been carried out and, due to its importance, I must congratulate you”, said the Minister of Defense, José Huerta, to the experts of SIMA in charge of the work.

The minister added that the work is halfway done and he is sure that when the submarine returns to the sea it will be a very good tool for national defense.
“In the statement, it is noted that this is ‘a milestone for the increase of the operational capabilities of the naval industry in Peru’, in addition to being under the supervision of the Minister of Defense and the commanding general of the Navy, Admiral Gonzalo Ríos”, you can read in Perú 21.

It is expected that the modernization increases the useful life of the submarines Chipana, Angamos, Antofagasta, and Pisagua in 15 years.
