“The deceased is still wrapped in the enormous funeral bundle that served as a coffin,” said ULB professor and excavation leader Peter Eeckhout, in a statement, according to Fox News.
The mummy will be carefully examined using medical imaging technology and experts hope to find out what this person’s place was in society, if he or she suffered from any disease, and if there are any hidden artifacts.
Peru is rich in archaeological findings. This mummy adds up to evidence found earlier this year of what could be the largest single case of child sacrifice known to date. “The pre-Columbian burial site, known as Las Llamas, contains the skeletons of 140 children who were between the ages of five and 14 when they were ritually sacrificed during a ceremony about 550 years ago, according to experts who led the excavation”, said Fox News.
