The government is considering delaying Alan García’s safe conduct as much as possible if Uruguay decides to grant him asylum.
The ex-President is being investigated for having received $100,000 US dollars from Odebrecht in exchange for a conference in Brazil in 2012.
“According to the hypothesis of the Prosecutor’s Office, the money would have come out of Petty Cash 2, a fund destined to the payment of bribes”, said La República.
Last Saturday an impediment for García to leave the country was issued and he decided to enter the residence of the Uruguayan ambassador in Lima, on the grounds that he is a victim of political persecution.
Uruguay has said that they will take the necessary time before making a decision about granting García asylum or not.
“According to sources of the Executive consulted by this newspaper, the Government considers that the granting of the safe conduct that would allow García to leave the country would imply an admission that, in effect, García is politically persecuted”, La República wrote.
