Last Sunday, with Palm Sunday, Holy Week began. This is a religious festival that commemorates the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus in the Catholic religion, and it is celebrated widely in Peru.
Holy Week ends with Easter Sunday, and this period, besides it being a time for reflection, it’s a good time to organize a family trip.
Perú 21 also published a description of what Holy Week, Semana Santa in Spanish, will be like in several cities in Peru:
Ayacucho
The Holy Week in Ayacucho is recognized as the largest religious festival in Peru and the most imposing in the world, after the festival of Seville, in Spain. “According to Andina, since Sunday, April 7, activities are developed, such as the Way of the Cross that goes from the populous district of San Juan Bautista to the hill Acuchimay, followed by the processions and liturgical activities that are lived for a week”, Perú 21 explained.
But the activity that gathers thousands of followers in the world is the “Saturday of Glory” that will be on April 20, where about a dozen bulls will be taken from the Alameda Los Valdelirios that will pass through the streets more traditional, the Plaza de Armas de Huamanga, which will be seen by the thousands of spectators who will be in this place, to finally be handed over to institutions such as the Puericutorio, Acilo de Ancianos, among others.
Cusco
If you travel to Cusco on these dates you will appreciate the multiple processions that take place in the main streets of the Imperial City
Junín
In recent years, the province of Chanchamayo, in the Junín region, became the favorite destination of Holy Week because it offers a lot of activities full of adventure and adrenaline, but especially for its proximity to Lima.
Áncash
This city offers three tourist destinations where you can combine religious, traditional and gastronomic activities:
- The city of Huaraz
- The district of Chacas, in the province of Asunción
- The beaches of Tuquillo, in Huarmey
Lima
The capital of Peru also has several options that you can enjoy with family or friends. For example, the ruins of Rúpac (Huaral), known as the Machu Picchu of Lima, can provide you with a moment of distraction, adventure and nature.
