A young Peruvian windsurfer saved the life of a competitor despite the fact that it implied losing the regatta, reports local media today.

Sebastián Schreier Loret de Mola, who was leading one of the regattas of the Windsurfing World Championship, held in Spain, saved a Spanish sportsman who was floating unconscious and trapped after a collision with a German competitor.

“I heard the collision, turned back and just saw him: he was not reacting and I did not think twice. I jumped into the water, went under him and was able to free him. He regained conscioussness just as the paramedics were arriving,” said the Peruvian.

“The whole Spanish team and his family were very moved and thanked me,” remembers Schreir.

His action has also awarded him a Fair Play Award from the International Olympics Committee, that he received in Lima.

I suspect, this award will be worth much more than any victory trophy, and will be a moment he remembers in 50 years as one of his greatest.

My hat is off to a young man with so much heart!
