Peru: Opposition leader Humala calls for elections

(LIP-jl) -- Peru's opposition party, the Peruvian Nationalist Party (Partido Nacionalista Peruano) announced by way of its leader Ollanta Humala that members of the country's Constitutional Tribunal should be elected by 'the people' to avoid political manipulation, which according to him, occurs on a frequent basis.

Humala considers this type of measure will give the Constitutional Tribunal much more legitimacy and most importantly, credibility among Peru's often neglected poor majority.

Additionally, the former presidential candidate, who narrowly lost last year's election to Alan Garcia, believes that key 'neutral' positions such as the Public Defender, the General Controller, and the Director of the Central Bank Reserve, should be decided by a popular vote.

"By doing this, the belief that the federal government has influence and power over so called 'neutral positions' will be eliminated," said Humala.

Meanwhile, the evaluating authority of Constitutional Tribunal candidates, Aurelio Pastor, rejected Humala's call for elections and said that members of the tribunal do not represent positions of popular representation but rather of technical law.
