Chavez - Humala Aid Earthquake Victims in Ica, Pisco, Chincha, Peru

(LIP-ir) -- The distribution of canned food products with the pictures of Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez and Nationalist Party leader, Ollanta Humala have raised a concern among politicians in Peru.

The products are being distributed to the victims of the magnitude-8 earthquake which hit Peru and devastated the Region of Ica August 15.

The canned food propaganda was reported by citizens in the provinces of Pisco, Ica, Chincha and Cañete, where it has been reported that members of the Nationalist party have arrived and begun distributing the food without coordinating with Peru's National Civil Defense.

According to Peru's Expreso newspaper, which got a hold of the distributed goods, the cans have a red label with the pictures of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Peru's Nationalist Party leader Ollanta Humala. In addition, between the two pictures there is the symbol of Ollanta Humala's political group, an "O".

The label then criticizes the Peruvian government for its lack of efficiency and speed, stating that "our brother Hugo Chavez" will help because Peru's government does not care about the victims pain and has left them hungry, thirsty and among pillage.

Peru's Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Antonio García Belaunde, stated that humanitarian aid should not be mixed with politics and should not be a means of propaganda. Peru's President Alan Garcia has also addressed the issue, stating it was not the time for political propaganda.

Amazing that people fall for this type of low class and crass politician.  What a dog you need to be to offer help with such messages attached taking advantage of a disaster for political gain. True humanitarians don't need their picture attached to the help they give, they just give and then go away.

The reward is in the giving because people need help.  But for people like Chavez and Humala the reward is in the giving only if they are getting (publicity) in return.

I can see Chavez now asking his advisors, "where else is there death and disaster?  Anyone freezing to death?  We can offer some token heating oil if they agree to become communists..."  What a guy.

Agreed, Chavez is looking for nothing more than a photo op and using the people in a crisis to do it.

He could care less about anything except for more power and opportunity for him and his friends who are suddenly growing richer and richer.

I agree with both of you, astonishing that they used time to print these propaganda instead of sending it out asap! I hope that the people will understand the lack of ethics and moral of both "political dogs"

Just one question: Who paid for the cans?

Absolutely disgusting!  I can't imagine anyone would use this terrible situation for political gain.  I hope this comes back to haunt them in upcoming elections.  May the Peruvian people remember this and drive these communists out of their land.

God Bless Peru

Garcia tried to link Humala to Chavez to hurt his chances in the election. If Humala or Chavez were to get the maximum political boost from this, they would not have put Chavez's picture on the cans.

I'm placing my bets on either Garcia (if his government is even competent enough to deliver tuna) or the US being behind this.
