Peru: Chile's Supreme Court Justice Postpones Fujimori Hearing for Medical Reasons

(LIP-ir) -- Chile's Supreme Court has not made a ruling on whether Peru's former President Alberto Fujimori should be extradited to Peru to face criminal charges yet.

On the contrary, Chile's Supreme Court justices have postponed the hearings at least until Monday.

The case is being postponed because the president of the five-justice panel, Justice Alberto Chaigneau filed for sick leave until September 10.

Strangely enough, Justice Alberto Chaigneau suggested last week that a final ruling would be made by September 6.

According to Chile's online newspaper El Mercurio, the justices have already rejected 10 of the corruption charges being filed by Peru and can not agree on the final two, both of which involve Fujimori's participation in death squad killings.

While Chile's Supreme Court justices do not have a deadline, Chaigneau has suggested they will rule as soon as possible because the person in question is under house arrest.

Peru's request to extradite the former president, on charges of bribery, misuse of government funds and taking part in death-squad killings, was denied by Chile's Judge Orlando Álvarez last month.

Despite what Chilean Supreme Court Prosecutor, Monica Maldonado officially recommended in June, Judge Alvarez considered that there was not enough evidence to extradite Peru's former President.

What this means is that Fujimori is not able to complete all of his wire transfers to the accounts of those who will decide his fate. Justice Alberto Chaigneau has come up short, along with Judge Alvarez.
