Peru's Health Minister asks not to be alarmed by pandemic declaration

Andina

Peruvian Health Minister Oscar Ugarte Ubilluz today asked Peruvians not to be alarmed but to be vigilant against the declaration of global pandemic (Phase 6) of the AH1N1 Influenza, and added that country’s health authorities have an sufficient stock of antivirals to meet new cases.

At a press conference held at the ministerial headquarters, Ugarte asked people who have flu and fever higher than 38 degrees Celsius to go to the nearest hospital to receive proper medical care.

"We should not be alarmed, but we must be vigilant. We have to take precautions," he said noting that most of the cases so far detected in Peru (77) have not required hospitalization.

He added that his portfolio is strengthening the epidemiological surveillance of this virus, especially in cases suspected and cases of seasonal flu that can result in complications of pneumonia.

Sure, they're prepared.  Just like they were prepared for cholera.
