Peru's Labor Minister says Doe Run has not shut down operations

Peru's Ministry of Labor (MTPE) informed this afternoon that Doe Run Peru has not officially shut down its operations yet, so the workers should in fact have worked today as usual.

He remarked that the MTPE is participating in the talks with the company representatives in order to find a suitable solution to the workers' issues, so that they can keep their jobs.

“The talks were delayed for tomorrow (June 23rd). However , due to this, some union leaders misinformed the workers, telling them that their jobs were at risk, that they would lose them,” said Jorge Villasante, Peru's Labor Minister.

Villasante asked the workers "not to listen to political manipulation” and to return to work.

Ira Rennert has no shame. The pollution and contamination is an abomination. Meanwhile he lives in a US$100 million house in the Hamptons of NY.  The 100,000 square feet house has 29 bedrooms, 2 bowling alleys, 39 bathrooms, parking for 200 cars and is on a 68 acre beachfront lot. Take a peek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:IMG_0939a.jpg).  Do you think he lays awake at night thinking about the contaminated water the children drink in La Oroya?

Nobody in Peru is overly concerned with pollution and the health problems pollution creates.  'Everywhere has pollution' they say.  Nice excuses.

jb, if the government down here wasn't so incompetent and corrupt, they would have shut down the place long ago.  The company is a bunch of sleazebags, but not to be blamed, it's the idiots that don't protect their own people.

David N, you are correct.  When the government auctioned Centromin (La Oroya) in 1997, they placed conditions regarding the environmental cleanup.  Doe Run was originally not the winning bidder.  It was a company from Europe.  After winning the bid, they took a closer look at the clean up costs and decided it was not possible.  They chose to forfeit their multi-million dollar bid bond and walk away.  Ira Rennert, I am sure with the same knowledge, chose to step in as the 2nd place bidder.  I am sure he never intended to comply with the clean up and as we see continues to "slow roll" the government.
